Johannesburg – Eight men participating in a syndicate robbing 11 banks for one year in Mpumalanga and Gautheng have received life sentences.

The eight men were sentenced to the Supreme Court in Pretoria after a two-year trial.

Hawks welcomed the decision.

Speaker Hangwani Mulaudzi says this is a significant sentence.

"We have also added imprisonment for racketeering, which is innovative, and we believe that this will send a strong message to other unions, but at the same time it will strengthen our investigations into working with all these unions."
