"While [provincial executive committee member Nomusa Dube-Ncube] she was still checking the credentials, some started being chaotic, and when she tried to discipline them, they became hostile to her.
"Then they started kicking tables and chairs and the meeting fell apart because things got violent and bad," an insider told TimesLive
On Friday, it was announced that Gumede's supporters still want her to be the city's first citizen and want her to return as ANC chair in the eThekwini region.
Gumede was terminated and subsequently dismissed this week after a two-day special meeting of the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), which issued recommendations to the Provincial Working Committee (PWC) to be recalled.
Until two months ago, she chaired the eThekwini region, the largest ANC region in the country.
Gumede is currently on bail at R50,000 after being arrested earlier this year on corruption charges related to the multi-million dollar solid waste auction in Durban.
She had previously been placed on special leave by the party for 30 days in June, which was then extended twice after the PEC could not decide until the first expired date.
