Mother of media magnate Oprah Winfrey, Vernita Lee, died on Thanksgiving, November 22, at the age of 83.
She died at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Lee was already set to relax at a private funeral, a spokeswoman for Winfrey told the media.
She has survived by Winfrey and another daughter she gave up for adoption shortly after birth, Patricia Amanda Faye Lee. Mother and daughter re-connect later in life.
Lee had two other children who both had preceded her.
Winfrey is expected soon in South Africa, where he is expected to appear at the Global Civil Festival with fans of Beyonce, Jay-Z, Black Coffee and many other international stars.
Twitterati quickly expressed their condolences, but Oprah did not contact Twitter after Thanksgiving.
