Residents of the upper north coast were recovered after a fire

After almost 24 hours, energy has been restored to all thousands of customers affected by power cuts in northern Sydney.

A fire in the basement of the electric substation in the Hornsby area around midday on Wednesday caused severe cable damage, which reduced energy to about 26,000 homes and businesses in the upper north coast and the Hills.

The interruption of the power supply was caused by a fire in the cellar at the Hornsby substation, which severely damaged the cables.

Ausgrid crews worked on Wednesday and at night, gradually re-establishing power to 24,000 customers in areas including Asquith, Mount Colah and parts of Hornsby, about 6 am on Thursday.

Ausdrida said that the repair works were complex and several thousand were left without power in parts of Warrog, Normanhurst, Wittara, and Hornsby until the morning.
