The sad, very sad news reached the Bulgarian basketball community. After a long illness at the age of 69, one of our basketball legends – the great Penka Stoyanova – went away.
She was born on 21.01.1950 in the town of Karlovo. Her basketball business card is more than impressive, with her performances on the pitch, her smile, her positivity and her advice leaving a huge hole in the hearts of all basketball fans not only in our country, but also in Europe and the world. basketball.
With the national team, she was a silver medalist at the Olympic Games in Moscow, USSR, in 1980, and a bronze medalist at the Montreal Games, Canada, in 1976. She has participated in 8 European Championships. She is a silver medalist at the Championship in Varna, Bulgaria in 1972 and a bronze medal from Clermont Ferrand in 1976. There are 8 first places to participate in 12 Balkan competitions and another 2 third places at the Youth Festival and Universiade. Three times (in 1972, 1976 and 1981) she was included in the European team of which she is captain. He took second place in the 1973 World Festival in Lima, Peru, and in the World Games of the R. W. Jones ”in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1983 with the second team of Italy.
Three-time champion of Bulgaria with Maritsa (Plovdiv) in 1971, 1973 and 1974 with coach Tencho Nachev. She is four times silver and bronze medalist in the Bulgarian Basketball Championship. With his home club, he is also twice a finalist for the Liliana Ronketti Cup – in 1979 and 1980. There are 580 matches recorded in the national team. She was captain of all national suits, and from 1974 to 1981 was captain of the representative women's national team in which she was first included in the 1967 World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic.
Penka Stoyanova is the first Bulgarian basketball player to play professional basketball abroad. From 1981 to 1983 he was a competitor of the Italian Roma. It has been included in the symbolic fives of Europe by the Corriere Business Sport newspaper. In 1969 she was personally awarded by the President of Italy at the big international tournament in Avellino.
She was twice selected as the # 1 Athlete of the Year in Plovdiv. In 1985, in her honor, a first-ever friendly match was organized between the national team of Bulgaria and a national team of Europe.
He has been an honorary citizen of the town of Karlovo since 1985 and of Plovdiv since 2000. She is among the torchbearers of the Olympic flame for the Athens, Greece Games in 2004. In 2007, she was included in the FIBA list of 35 competitors who contributed to the development of world basketball in the second fiftieth century of the 20th century.
