A woman was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and a family of nine people was displaced after a fire burst into a bedroom in the basement of an apartment in the east end of Ottawa.
Firefighters were summoned to Birchmount Drive's four-bed, two-storey complex after receiving reports of smoking around 12:07. Saturday.
Four people were rated by paramedics on stage. A woman was injured as she tried to leave the apartment and was taken to hospital with minor smoke inhalation injuries, the paramedic reported. The fire was fired quickly, but the heavy smoke had already reached the floor.
A family of nine and one dog is being displaced and assisted by the Canadian Red Cross and the Salvation Army. All other residents of the building are able to return home, writes Ottawa.
A fire investigator is sent to the apartment in Ottawa to determine the cause of the fire.
