KALGARI – Alberta's Health Minister says the province extends the ability of nurses to prescribe drugs and order X-rays.
Sara Hoffman says the government will introduce new rules that will allow registered nurses to prescribe drugs at tourist clinics as part of the STI programs and health and safety clinics in the workplace.
Registered nurses will not be able to prescribe controlled medicines and substances.
Hoffman says that nurse practitioners who can now prescribe drugs will now be able to put bone fractures.
Denny Hisha, president of the College and the Association of Registered Nurses in Alberta, has made the changes a cornerstone for registered nurses.
Hicha says changes mean people will have better access to medication and tests when they need it.
Hoffman praised nurses for the important role they play in healthcare.
"I am proud that our government supports nurses to use their expertise and training to help the Alberta families get the care they need faster and closer to home," she said on Friday.
