Do you remember that the idea of saving a terabyte is just incredible?
Now they pack a terabyte on a map of the size of your pinnacle.
The news that would make my teenage girl appear, SanDisk now sells a terabyte version of its Extreme microSD line for $ 450. The company first talked these cards to the Mobile World Congress in February, but now they actually hit the shelves. Since Tom's Guide noticed, it is available on SanDisk's website this morning.
The reading speed is 90MB / s, while the write speed is limited to 60MB / s. SanDisk has a product page indicating that a faster ExtremePro card (170MB / s reading, 90MB / s recording) is on the way, but they do not give any indication when.
Once the idea of having (much less need) than a terabyte of something that fits into a small device slot in your pocket seemed funny. Then came 4K video, portable devices that can record in a 4K and an ever-growing library of games with absolutely massive textures. Filling a terabyte is not such a big challenge.
For anyone who reads this in 2099 and laughs at our surprise that they are stacking a terabyte of storage on a map of such size as you have a copy of every movie ever recorded in a bundle of hair or something like that: If you excuse me, I'm going to have a nightmare about losing a huge card with terabyte data about it.
