Pixel 3 vs. OnePlus 6T: Which Android Should You Buy?

If you are on the premium phone market right now, know that there is more to the newest iPhone versus the Samsung Galaxy S9 to explore. This year, two other contestants, Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T, also provide the highest level of Android experience with the latest and greatest processing speeds, cameras and software features.

Starting at $ 899 (Pixel 3 XL), Pixel 3 (with a higher Pixel 3 XL ratio) has an exclusive camera that takes the most consistent shots in every lighting scenario. The call blocking feature that works on AI directly from Google also gives precedence over other great phones this year. (For Black Friday Pixel 3 Deals in the US, click here.)

At the same time, OnePlus 6T is the most affordable, premium Android phone you can get. It starts at only $ 549 (£ 499, converted to AU $ 775), is equipped with a rigid camera and a fingerprint scanner. The best for US buyers, OnePlus 6T is already sold through T-Mobile (though you can also get it from OnePlus website) and works on the Verizon network. (During Black Friday, you can load OnePlus 6T with some extra packagess as a Dash charger.)

These two great options focus on design, camera, software and performance. See who's coming up.

Editor's Note, November 22: We updated this article, originally posted on November 4, with additional impressions, comparisons with Night Sight on Pixel 3 and Black Friday transactions.

OnePlus 6T fingerprint reader against Pixel 3 waterproof

OnePlus 6T wins the first victory rights as the first one in the US that has a fingerprint scanner (or FOD). This means you can scan your fingerprint in front of the display to unlock the screen and the phone really has thin frames everywhere. During my time, FOD worked fast enough for most of the time, but it did not work as fast as the fingerprint scanner did on the previous OnePlus 6.

Due to the space the FOD takes inside the phone, OnePlus pulls the 6T headphone (though Pixel 3 also does not have one). If you no longer own a wireless headset to listen to music and calls, OnePlus is equipped with a 3.5 to 3.5 mm USB adapter adapter in the box. You can also purchase a USB USB flash drive for an extra price of $ 20 (£ 16, which turns into AU $ 30). Pixel 3, on the other hand, is offered for free along with its own Pixel Buds.

Pixel 3 looks similar to Pixel 2 last year, but fine design tweaks such as thinner frames and shiny trim around the phone add polishing this time. I am also a big fan of the new color version of Pixel "Not Pink".

If you look at the bigger Pixel 3 XL, you'll notice that it has one of the thickest screen screens we've seen. Although you can hide it, this is not very flattering compared to OnePlus 6T in a shadow-shaped shade (which you can mask with black strips). Just be glad that Google corrected the mistake you made two recesses appear on the display.

But regardless of whether you get Pixel 3 XL with a slot, know that both models have a wireless charge and they can be saturated with any Qi-compatible charging pad. (Fast boot, however, works only on Google's own pixel booth charger.) Pixel is also nominated for IPX8, which means it can survive about 3 feet underwater (1m) for 30 minutes.

winner: While the first ones that have a fingerprint screen on the screen are laudable for OnePlus 6T, as far as bonus features appear, I find the Pixel 3 for wireless charging and waterproofing more useful.

The OnePlus 6T camera is admirable, but Pixel 3 wins

At hundreds of dollars, less than its competitors, OnePlus 6T made impressive photos that are better or better sometimes from the Pixel 3 camera (in auto mode). For example, there were times when OnePlus 6T had a wider dynamic range than Pixel 3 when Pixel is in its HDR + mode. 6T refreshed and hit the colors a little more. But when I switched to the improved Pixel HDR + mode, it significantly outstrips OnePlus 6T.

Another example is low light photography. Both can take excellent pictures in low light – illuminate objects and capture as much information and focus as possible. In the 6T Nightscape shooting mode, it retains the same, if not slightly more, details of Pixel 3. However, Pixel 3's Night observation function, which became available as an updated post-marketing version, works extremely well. It even hints at the darkest scenes and keeps the objects in focus.

As for the pictures of people, the bokeh effect on OnePlus 6T and Pixel 3 looked great, but they had several sharp spots in the gently blurred background. If I had to choose, however, I liked how Pixel kept more details in the foreground. Plus, Google's phone has the effect of just one camera, unlike the OnePlus 6T dual camera setup.

Finally, I chose the suicides I took on Pixel. The OnePlus did not attract so much detail into my face and hair and made my skin look a lot fainter. The Pixel also has a second camera on the front for wide-angle shots.

winner: It's hard not to be impressed by the power of the OnePlus camera, given the low price, but Pixel 3 is better.

Software: Android Pie with a few extras

Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T release Google's latest Android Pie from the box. Both include many Pie updates, including gesture navigation, an adaptive battery (in which the phone learns what apps you do not use often and limits system resources), and more options to tweak your phone settings when it's in "Do not disturb me ".

In addition, OnePlus does not add anything else to the operating system. This is not necessarily bad; one of my favorite things about OnePlus phones is its minimalist stripping of Android and the lack of bloatware. Unlike other phones that sometimes overwhelm excess software, OnePlus keeps things refreshingly simple.

On this note, however, while Pixel 3 adds more to the operating system than to OnePlus, these features are quite useful. For example, the Call screen answers calls on your behalf, and you can read a real-time transcript to decide whether to block or answer a call. Pixel Digital Welfare also shows you how you spend your time on the phone and lets you restrict the use of the app. The phone will get quick software updates once available, and Pixel owners get unlimited cloud storage and photos.

winner: While I appreciate the limited approach of OnePlus to Android, Pixel adds practical features to user experience without neglecting it.

OnePlus 6T has the upper hand with speed and battery

Snapdragon 845, Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T chipset are bright and responsive. Among them, I really do not notice differences in speed with everyday tasks such as running applications or triggering camera shutter. But if we want to split hairs, OnePlus 6T has a slight advantage over Pixel 3 for benchmarks. See both results below:

As far as battery life is concerned, both phones have achieved excellent ratings and have lasted more than 16 hours in our continuous airplane video test. Specifically, the Pixel 3 XL, which has a larger battery of 3,430 mAh compared to its smaller 2915 mAh battery of Pixel 3, is charged for 16 hours and 49 minutes. Meanwhile, OnePlus 6T continued longer, with an average of around 17 hours.

winner: OnePlus 6T has the edge of this one.

And the winner is …

The Pixel 3 is an objectively better phone besides processing performance and battery life. It has a waterproof design, a superb camera that captures impressive, low-light photos and useful software from Google that promises to let you know about Android features and security features.

But it's also hard to ignore the fact that Pixel 3 starts at $ 350 and £ 240 more than OnePlus 6T. If you go for the latter, you still have a fast and reliable phone and even more money in your pocket to buy many other things – such as a pair of wireless headphones.

Whichever you go, you're still going with an excellent phone and if you can afford Pixel 3, know that you have one of the best android around. But if you want to save some money, OnePlus 6T is your better price.
