He stressed that obesity is associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAHS), and Mexico is the first place in the overweight population and cardiovascular complications in the world.

Muciño Hernández, coordinator of the otorhinolaryngology module, at the 21st International Congress of Medicine Medicine (CIAM), Hospital Civil Guadalajara (HCG), said that 10% of overweight presented by man increases the risk of having SAHOS.

Also, he adds, cardiovascular problems increase two or three times the risk of suffering in the event of obesity.

He explained that there are serious cases where the patient stops breathing for longer periods; Despite this symptom, four out of five people who present it at this level are unaware of their condition.

Symptoms of the syndrome include drowsiness during the day; cognitive impairment; memory change; personality changes; intense snoring and warnings or micro-awakenings.

Muciño Hernández pointed out that the disease occurs in adults and children; in these last cases, if they have a syndrome, they probably have it all their life. Therefore, he stressed the importance of preventing obesity through physical activity and balanced nutrition.

"The OSAHS patient can be operated or helped with a positive pressure-breathing machine, but if you do not lose weight, there's no good answer," he said.

While the coordinator of the Raúl Durán López module said there was underestimation of SAHOS, as 80% of cases, moderately to severely, were not diagnosed.

He specified that snoring has no close connection with apnea in all cases, and when it is, it is intense snoring with spaces where one stops breathing.
