Fibromyalgia is associated with depression and anxiety

Between 20% and 80% of people living with depression have fibromyalgia, a condition that causes neuropathic pain and is caused by improperly functioning nervous fiber, said Dr. Maria Isabel Barreira Vicalpando of the National Psychiatric Institute.

He explained that in cases of anxiety correspondence with fibromyalgia varies between 20% and 50%.

In a statement, Dr. Barrera said that this is a condition that is difficult to diagnose because there are no laboratory tests that warn of their presence so patients can reach health services seven years after the onset of symptoms. ,

The specialist said that not all people diagnosed with depression or anxiety can deal with this painful disorder.

Disease occurs when several elements are combined, such as genetic predisposition, with a history of some kind of physical or emotional violence, chronic abuse and stress during childhood and adolescence, and experience of some circumstances that cause a strong emotional impact such as an accident or divorce.

He noted that the pain of patients who live with this disease is similar to that experienced by a person with a diabetic foot or herpes zoster.

"The garment is not tolerated, nor is it some stimulation, the sensation is burning pain, burning or as if electric strikes have taken place," he said.

For this type of symptom, institutions such as the National Psychiatric Institute, Dr. Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz, offer patients some recommendations.

"Among them is the consumption of antioxidant-rich foods to avoid weakness and muscle pain and to swallow up to eight glasses of water to prevent demineralisation of the body, among others," said the specialist.

The co-ordinator of the psycho-educational sessions at the Institute has indicated that it is important to make a clinical assessment to determine if the anxiety disorder, for example, is due to a medical condition such as a thyroid problem or a mental health problem.

Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic condition that does not cure, but can be controlled. Your chronic pain affects people's quality of life.

"It creates a great physical disability, making the movement, fatigue, pain difficult, imagine constantly in such pain, with fatigue and concentration problems," says the specialist.

Among its symptoms are pain in the focal points of the body, chronic fatigue, headache, irritable bowel syndrome, allergies and morning stiffness of some limbs of the body, among others.
