Philip Hammond's pressure to tax Big Tech



IFor years in planning, the mandarins of the Treasury have spent months in torture about how best to make it fly without shaking the credibility of the reputation of the UK as a technology center.

But when Philip Hammond finally revealed his long-awaited digital services tax he was overshadowed by something else: transatlantic stumbling between Donald Trump and the French plans for such a Silicon Valley tax.

Such charges are "unfairly directed to US companies," such as Facebook, Amazon and Google, said Robert Lighthizer, a US sales representative, of France's decision to approve a technology tax.
