Not all calories have a direct effect on our body weight
Foods like sand in the sea and new ones are added every week. Who should keep track? In recent large-scale nutrition studies, various diets have been observed over a longer period of time to identify which diet is better at losing weight. It turns out that losing weight is not just a matter of calories. Even though all participants received the same number of calories for 20 weeks, one particular group experienced the most decrease.
An American research team from Boston Children's Hospital and Framingham State University observed and controlled overweight individuals over a 20-week period when following a prescribed diet plan. During this period, body weight, insulin levels, metabolic hormones and calories burned are measured regularly. This shows that weight loss is more important than just the number of calories. The results of the study have recently been published in the journal "The BMJ".

Which diet is best for losing weight?
What is the most effective diet for losing weight that lasts long? This question was answered by an American research team. Researchers compared three diets with a group of obese subjects over a period of 20 weeks. Three diets – the same number of calories, different weight loss
The participants were divided into three groups. One group received a diet consisting of 20% carbohydrates, 40% carbohydrates in the second group and 60% carbohydrates in the third group. Even though the number of calories was the same in all three groups, participants from the low-carbohydrate group showed the greatest decrease and the longest continuous weight loss.
Calories are not the same as calories
The researchers concluded that calories from carbohydrates cause faster fat storage. "Carbohydrates increase insulin levels during the diet and encourage fat cells to store more calories," said the Research Director. med. David Ludwig in a press release on the results of the study. Weight loss in the low carbohydrate group was significantly greater
As the researchers documented, total energy expenditure in the group with the lowest carbohydrate diet was the highest in 20 weeks. With the same weight and calorie intake on average, participants who follow a low-carbohydrate diet burn about 250 kilocalories a day more than those with higher carbohydrate intake. People who already have high insulin levels at the start of the study are even more drastic. Here, a low carbohydrate group burns 400 more calories per day.
Carbohydrate insulin model
This study provides evidence that the so-called carbohydrate-carbohydrate model is suitable for the treatment of obesity. Researchers were able to show that carbohydrate intake leads to higher release of insulin. This promotes fat buildup, slows down metabolism, inhibits satiety and encourages hunger. "Our observations challenge the belief that all calories are the same for the body," said the director of the second study Cara Ebbeling. (Vb)
