The Greek Football Federation on Wednesday announced the appointment of former Dutch international winger John Van Ship as its new coach for a two-and-a-half year contract, without revealing its value.

The 55-year-old Van Chip, who was born in Canada, will succeed national selectman Angelos Anastasadis, who was fired eight months after taking over after playing seven games and winning only two.

He was a member of Ajax Amsterdam between 1981 and 1992 and played for Genoa between 1992 and 1996. He also wore a jersey of the Dutch national team in 41 international appearances, scoring two goals between 1986 and 1995.

After retiring from football, he coached in the Netherlands and switched between several clubs (2017-2018), Ajax (2009) and Totti (2001-2002). He also directed Melbourne City and Guadalajara, between 2004 and 2008.

Anastasidis, who was appointed coach of Greece in 2004 on behalf of the host country of Portugal, was fired for his modest European Qualifying campaign for Europe 2020, which led him to a 2-1 victory over Liechtenstein. Zero in the first stage before drawing against Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-2, losing at home to Italy 3-0 and Armenia 2-3, where he is fourth in Group T with 4 points.
