Proton to develop vehicle localization solutions locally

Proton has announced that he has entered a joint venture to develop technology and products to connect cars with local and regional applications. The co-operation agreement was signed earlier today by Proton Edar, the local telecommunications company Altel Communications and the Chinese company ECarX (Hubei) Technology.

The ceremony was attended by Miao Wei, China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology and Malaysian Deputy Communications and Media Minister Eddin Syazlee Shith. The event was also attended by Zhejiang Geely Li Shufu.

The new SP opens up the possibility of local R & D activities and the production of automotive connectivity solutions and digital services, which are expected to be one of the key drivers for future car sales. The areas of coverage will include the development of network connectivity management and Proton telematics services.

For the national carmaker, this will significantly increase the local content of this front, most directly on the Proton X70, when the locally assembled version of CKD comes on sale later this year.

In April Proton's Datuk Syed Faisal Akbar said the SUV's Geely Smart Ecosystem (GKUI) information system will be updated and revised for local users as part of the switch to CKD. The CBU's car system received a new update last month to respond to several issues.

Although no details are suggested, location is expected, among other things, to review the map content used for the navigation feature, which is based on the Baidu version developed in China in the CBU X70. Models such as Proton Iriz, Persona, and Exora RC 2019 are also based on GKUI-based information systems and are also expected to benefit from this move.

The decision to locate research and development will also reduce costs and minimize the reliability of foreign parts. Syed Faisal said this would also open up the use of "Hi Proton" in export markets, especially within ASEAN where customization of each market / language can be made easier with local R & D.

"Collaboration like this will enable us to strengthen ourselves in the rapidly evolving area of vehicle coupling solutions while also increasing the knowledge base of our R & D engineers. It also allows us to explore the possibility of expanding our connection solutions to Proton's export markets, especially in neighboring ASEAN countries, "he said at the signing ceremony.
