2019 is going to be a pretty significant year for Samsung. In addition to announcing its flagship Galaxy S10, Samsung is also launching its first fully foldable smartphone. Additionally, the company has confirmed that it is working on some new displays with cutouts and notches, called Infinity-O, Infinity-U and Infinity-V. Among them, the Infinity-O has been generating a lot of interest for its punch hole-style cutout for the selfie camera. To get a better idea of what this looks like, we have renders of what could be the Galaxy A8s that is due to launch in January.
The renders have been provided by AllAboutSamsung. It shows the alleged Galaxy A8s with a punch hole display, which Samsung is calling Infinity-O. This kind of display does not have a notch on the top, but a small circular cutout in the middle of the display to house the selfie camera.
In this render, the cutout and selfie camera are placed in the top left corner just as Samsung described it back when it announced the Galaxy A6s. Unlike your typical notches, the cutout can not be hidden through the software. It will be always present to the eye, so it will be interesting to see how intrusive it will be to the viewing experience. On the plus side, the hole is pretty tiny and Samsung may just customize the UI around it.
The Infinity-O display removes the need for a notch or thick bezel on top so it should offer a more immersive display. In the render, the Galaxy A8s is shown to have only a thin strip of bezel on the bottom. Additionally, the renders also show the Galaxy A8s with a triple camera setup similar to the Galaxy A7 (2018) and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. We also see a total of three buttons around the frame, which suggests the volume and power button on one side and a Bixby button on the other.
Not much else is known about the Galaxy A8s apart from rumors that it may rock and Snapdragon 710 chipset coupled with 6GB of RAM. It can also ship with Android 9 Pie with the new One UI on top that will be optimized for the cutout display.
The Galaxy A8s is expected to be the first to come with the new Infinity-O display before the Galaxy S10. This is not surprising because Samsung has introduced new technologies to its mid-range Galaxy A-line to help it compete against the likes of OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi. So after the triple camera Galaxy A7 and the quad-camera Galaxy A9, the Infinity-O Galaxy A8s will be next in line and could be announced sometime in January.
