The Dutch Research Organization (NWO) has provided EUR 9 million to investigate infectious diseases that are spread by mosquitoes.
The amount is supplemented by seven public organizations up to 10 million euros. The study takes five years and is conducted by a researcher from the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. The Center will work with other research institutes in the Netherlands.
NWO provides the available quantity because water-rich landscapes make the Netherlands more vulnerable to outbreaks of infectious diseases.
An important goal is to determine whether voyage, water management and landscape contribute to the risk of an outbreak. The role of climate change is also being considered.
Based on these data, steps should be taken to make the Netherlands better prepared for an outbreak. This should be a "weather forecast for outbreaks," study leader Marion Copmans said.
