Wellington is likely to become the next city to engage in the action of an electric scooter with Lime in talks with Wellington City Council.

Hot on the heels of multiple launches in Auckland and Christchurch, US-based companies want to bring their electric scooters to the capital

Lime's founder and Caen Contee's vice president of expansion, in Wellington this week for the annual Traffic Institute (Trafinz) conference, said talks with key stakeholders had been positive.

"We've been more than fortunate to see both sides of the table in terms of city officials and company leaders who really see this as an opportunity to build something that meets their needs.

"We will only work with them but I don't think it makes sense that we can have a program here in the coming months," Contee said.

Lime is currently operating in more than 125 markets and has recorded at least 20 million rides in the past 18 months.

The scooters, though popular, have faced their counterattack with Auckland City Council which launched an urgent scooter security check after a board member was nearly beaten.

The government also looks at the law on low-powered vehicles, the category that fits the e-scooter.

The company was launched in Auckland and Christchurch earlier this year with Kiwis recording hundreds of thousands of rides.

Contee has worked hard to ensure drivers and other road users remain safe, launch new safety campaigns and provide helmets.

"The core part of allowing us to operate requires us to be careful and ultimately create the safest program to allow cities to feel like they are adopting something the best."

Despite the controversy, Lime is not the only company targeting the capital with Onzo also wanting to enter the electronic market.

Chief growth officer Min-Kyu Jung confirmed on Monday that after testing the company's bicycle, Onzo would seek to introduce its own e-scooter to Wellington.

Safety is the most important for the company, given the recent negative coverage of some e-scooters.

"I wouldn't say I'm nervous, I think the risk is too much especially when you compare it to a traffic accident," Jung said.

Onzo's six-month trial ended early next year.
