More than 200 newborn calves have died in flames in a calf rearing farm north of Oamaru tonight.
Crews were called to the flames at McDonald's Rd, about 10 km north of Oamaru, shortly before 6:00 pm.
It was initially reported to be in a cutting canopy, but it is incorrect, said a spokesman for the New Zealand Fire and Emergency later this evening.
A digger was reportedly used to remove bales of hay from the building, after which it was revealed that more than 200 calves had died, he said.
Full details were not immediately available, but part of the complex was badly damaged.
Two firefighters from Oamaru and Glenavi were present, backed by water tanks from Glenavi and Weston, and some firefighters used breathing apparatus.
The fire has already been extinguished and is not considered suspicious, he said.
