Mauritanian children in Northland have some of the highest levels of rheumatic fever in the world – 12-Jul-2019

The Medical Journal revealed ninety-three percent of cases, five to fourteen years old, maori.

Data contradicts a recent report by the Ministry of Health, which states that there has been a major improvement in acute rheumatic fever in the region.

Today's report says adults in Northland are at risk of delayed diagnosis – which may lead to more significant heart disease.

The preventable disease is strongly associated with poverty.

Public health initiatives are underway, but researchers suggest that prevention efforts need to be stepped up.
