The last time he played internationally for England, 11 November 2016 was against Scotland. Then he announced that the national team's career had ended.
But on Thursday in ten days, Wayne Rooney (33) made a comeback for England, against the United States. Not necessarily because he was good enough, but because the English Football Association wanted to respect him.
Rooney – now playing for D.C. United in the United States – thus get 120 international match numbers. The decision to create a reaction:
"I was surprised when I read this. And I'm still having trouble understanding that decision," guard legend Peter Shilton (69) said.
"It's been two years since Wayne last played a national match. England have recovered at a new level and have just put on a brilliant world cup. This puts it back, Shilton said, according to the Daily Mirror.
"It's not about how Wayne deserves to be respected. But you can do this, regardless of whether he plays. You should not only give fights, which are incorrect and maybe at the expense of younger players.
"I don't agree with that decision at all. It must be the greatest honor to play for your country. But in fact, the MLS American league is not close to the same level as the Premier League. Wayne Rooney has completed England. Gareth Southgate (coach) has left.
That Rooney quarreled in prizes was almost condemned by an integrated expert corps in England. The Football Association has not found an opportunity to respect Rooney – before now. The results of the match must be submitted to Wayne Rooney's charity fund.
"Rooney is the time scorer for England and has had a great career for the national team. But playing for England must be an honor. Maybe not that England will respect you," said Alan Shearer, an expert for the BBC and The Sun.
With 119 international matches, Rooney is only six matches from the man who has a record, Peter Shilton (125 matches). David Beckham followed third place (115 matches). But no one attacks Rooney on the score statistics. He has 53 goals for England. Then followed Bobby Charlton (49 goals) and Gary Lineker (48 goals).
– A player has never been respected like this before. A cynic would wonder if the FA did this because you struggled to sell tickets for a friendly match next Thursday, Shearer pointed out.
The commentator profiled in the Daily Mail, Martin Samuel, wrote:
Wayne Rooney's return to England is new. On the resume, there must be 119 matches and one charity match.
Some found the fact that Rooney was fighting, helping to devalue the draft of the England national team. Playing a national match is something that you will produce, not something you should get as a gift.
"Rooney deserves to hear the award from British supporters. But the debate will take place if he deserves a place in the team, writes BBC football referee Phil McNulty.
According to the BBC, Rooney reacted to his struggle against the United States:
"I am humble and happy to play for England again. I want to thank Gareth Southgate and the FA for inviting me back and to support my charitable work. Playing for England is the biggest honor of my career. Getting my 120th and final match. will be a special moment for me.
England met Croatia in the League of Nations three days later. That is without Rooney.
