With the beginning of the second millennium, Saudi film production increased, the number of Saudi films in the period 1975 to 2012 reached 255. Saudi directors and directors received dozens of prizes at Arab and international film festivals. Winning the Golden Award for the 2013 Beirut Film Festival, in the same year the Academy of Sciences and Arts announced Oujda's nomination in 71 nominations for the Oscar International Award as the first Saudi film.

In accordance with vision 2030, which was announced by His Majesty Crown Prince Prince Mohammad bin Salman in April 2016, and included important aspects of the development of culture and art to become a new cultural and economic expansion of the Kingdom, the cultural and artistic sectors witnessed a real revival that contributed to the creation of cultural industries related to art, theater, cinema, and infrastructure development for the cultural and entertainment sectors. For this purpose, the relevant bodies such as the General Authority for Culture, the General Authority for Entertainment and the Saudi Film Council were established. The kingdom opens its doors to Arab and international artists and creators. International music and music and entertainment shows are held. Theaters set up in April 2018, the company led by American company AMC, the world's largest cinema company, and Fox Cinema, is expected to open around 350 cinemas with more than 2500 screens by 2030.

This cultural and artistic awakening has a significant impact on the presence of Saudi films in international forums. In August 2016, the comedy "Ponda Pond Beraka" was chosen to represent the Kingdom at the Best Oscar Foreign Film Awards 2017. In May 2018, Saudi Arabia participated in the Film Festival The Cannes International in its latest issue through the special pavilion of the Saudi Film Council, where nine Saudi films are screened in the short film section of the festival in the first official Saudi representation in the history of this large world forum.
