The French state will support the development of the 700 million euro battery industry, stimulate the development of the electric car and invite European manufacturers to cooperate in autonomous vehicles. Emanuel Macron announced on Wednesday.

French-German project to build this European battery industry "will lead to the construction of two battery factories, one in France and one in Germany," added the head of the 100th International Automobile Manufacturers Association in Paris.

The € 700 million funding, planned for five years by the French state, must contribute to the emergence of a sector capable of competing in particular with Chinese and Korean producers.

"As President of France, I can not say that 100% of the batteries in France are produced in Asia," added Emanuel Macron.

France and Germany, which in turn want to unlock a billion euros, have been working for months to create a European partnership around a Franco-German consortium.

State support will take the form of grants, equity, or repayable advances, depending on the nature of the supported projects, said Elisha and communities are invited to contribute.

At the end of 2017, the European Union launched an initiative to create an Airbus battery. In parallel, several projects have been developed, such as Saft, German Siemens and Manz, and Belgian Solvay on the one hand and Swedish Northvolt on the other.

No carmaker has yet announced that it can participate directly in a consortium, but many think of it, recently French sources said.
