Kia introduced a new generation of engines with special valve opening technology.

The Kia, which belongs to the Hyundai Motor Group, has developed a continuously variable valve timing technology (CVVD), which will be widely used in its cars. The first engine with this innovation will be the Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi petrol engine.

CVVD improves capacity by 4% and reduces fuel consumption by 5%, while emissions are reduced by 12%, says Kia.

The typical variable phase control technology determines the opening and closing time of the valves (eg CVVT) or controls the intake air quantity (CVVL). Previous and existing valve management technologies could not regulate the length of the valves, as valve closures had to be opened, so it was not possible to respond to different situations while driving.

CVVD, by adjusting the valve opening time as required by the engine, takes the technology in a new direction. When the vehicle is running at unchanged speed at low revs, CVVD opens the suction valves from mid to end of the compression stroke. This helps reduce fuel consumption by reducing compression resistance.

When the engine is running at high speeds, for example at high speeds, the suction valve closes at the start of the compression stroke to maximize the amount of air required for the explosion. This improves torque, which affects better acceleration.

The new Ki-Smartstream G1.6 T-GDI is a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a power output of 132 kW (180 hp) and a torque of 265 Nm. This is the first engine in the group to use CVVD technology, plus a low-pressure exhaust valve that optimizes fuel consumption.

The development of the petrol engines has not stopped, the Mazdin Skyactive-X series engine, which thanks to the compression ratio allows double action – at high revolutions, classic after the spark ignition crank and as a small load as a self-ignition diesel engine.
