A severe storm on Friday damaged the Štanjel Castle in the municipality of Komen. Lightning struck the stone tower of the castle and tore part of the tower.
"On Friday evening, shortly before midnight, we received a call from the municipality of Comen that a lightning strike struck a stone, the eastern tower of Štanjel Castle and demolished part of the tower. " said Comenius Volunteer Fire Association (PGD) chairman Marko Adamic.
It was agreed that firefighters should intervene the next day when the weather was better, because of rain and darkness, access to the tower and other roofs was not possible. The situation was also not critical enough to endanger human life, he said.
The next day, on Saturday, firefighters went out into the field and found that part of the tower or. to remove half a meter from this safety stone. According to Adamic, they did that. As he explained, further demolition and repair of the damaged part of the castle tower would be required.
PGD Komen firefighters also assisted neighbors as stones damaged the roofs of six houses as well as four parked vehicles. "Some households also run out of electricity. According to initial estimates, property damage costs around € 30,000," said Adamic. He added that 16 firefighters with three vehicles, workers from the Komen municipality's above-ground plant and the civil defense commander were involved in the intervention.
According to him, locals do not remember that lightning would ever hit the tower of the castle.
