British public health experts have warned of excessive intake of pickled olives, saying that only five pills contain one-third of the recommended daily intake of adult salt.
Researchers at Queen Mary University and Action on Salt said people were unaware of how snacks could pose a health risk after finding that some olives were high in salt, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The research team, which analyzes 555 varieties of snacks available in stores, found that some olives contain 5 grams of salt per 100 grams, while the recommended daily limit for adults is only 6 grams, according to Sky News.
One of the four high salt foods was found without mentioning them in the nutritional facts of the package, making it difficult for consumers to make healthy choices.
It's not just olives. Many varieties on the market are high in salt and saturated fat.
