The FBI, the state investigators, and the US Marine Corps from nearby camps at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point joined the effort to find the boy. Hathaway was found on Thursday. It was a professional search and rescue team, the FBI said.

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes told reporters on Thursday that the authorities had found the boy after hearing someone call his mother. The boy was found "wet, cold and scratched," but he could talk.

It was not clear when Casey was in those two days, and what allowed him to stay safe.
