BROOKSVILLE, FLORIDA (FOX 13) – A person from Hernando County has been arrested after lawmakers say he is acting as a doctor and says he can treat diabetes.
MEPs say 73-year-old Onelio Hipolit-Gonzalez advertises his services on an advertising website for the Spanish community called Elclassificado.
The ad shows a photograph of Hipolit-Gonzalez in a white coat with the inscription "Dr. Onelio Hipolit" and states that it can treat hernias, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, arthrosis, kidney failure, vision problems and many other health problems.
Investigators say that Hippolytus-Gonzalez never had any medical license in Florida.
MEPs say Hipolit-Gonzalez arranged to meet a patient at home on February 7 and when the patient arrived, he was asked to fill in documents and pay $ 160.
Deputies say Hipolit-Gonzalez has checked the patient's blood pressure and then put a band around his head and asked him to hold a metal rod attached to a table machine that starts whining after it's turned on.
Deputies say he told the patient that he tested the heart, brain, intestinal system, bones, nerves and "everything else".
After the "test" is over, MEPs say that Hipolit-Gonzalez has told the patient that he has diabetes, osteoporosis and that he does not get enough oxygen in his brain, along with other illnesses. He said that for only $ 2,000 he can cure the patient's diabetes by using a treatment that involves injecting the patient with his own blood.
Deputies say that Hipolit-Gonzalez told them he was taking the blood of the patient, then injected the same blood he just pulled out of because he says he "fights" with the blood cells and boosts the immune system.
MEPs say he also told the patient that he had healed the owner of his home for diabetes and summoned him on the phone to get his testimony.
Detectives moved to this point and arrested Hipolit-Gonzalez, who told MPs that he did not believe he needed a license to practice medicine. He said he was a Cuban technician and received a certificate of iridology, herbology and nutrition when he moved to Florida.
Hipolit-Gonzalez faces accusations of unlicensed healthcare practice and is in the Hernando County Prison on a $ 10,000 bond.
MPs hope that anyone who has been treated by Hipolit-Gonzalez will come out and contact the sheriff's office at 352-754-6830.
