In a statement Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission said it hit the show with a $ 395,000 fine for abusing tons of emergency alert systems.
The Emergency Warning System (EAS) tone is used on television and mobile phones to alert people of impending emergencies such as tornadoes and floods.
To protect the purpose of the alert system, the agency has a rule against the use of EAS tones or their simulations – except in actual emergency situations, authorized tests or qualified public service announcements.
Jimmy Kimmel's show was not the only culprit.
The Lonely Stars Act television series also misuses the tone of the emergency alert system, the agency said. That will cost the Animal Planet a cancellation fee of $ 68,000.
In addition to fines, companies have agreed to a "strict compliance plan" to ensure that these alerts will not be restarted when there is no emergency, according to the agency.
All companies have 30 days to pay the penalty at the US Treasury.
