Chilean scientists make "photosynthetic" skin that regenerates tissue

Unlike synthetic leather that has been used for the treatment of wounds such as burns or trauma, this tissue is able to produce oxygen in the affected area with light stimulation, thus enabling regenerative processes, as explained by one of the project leaders, molecular biotechnology engineer Tomás Egaña.

When wounds, heart attacks or other conditions that damage blood vessels occur, the medical team must avoid tissue death due to lack of oxygen. Lower oxygenation also has an impact on the survival of tumors for radiotherapy, for example.

"We have created the first generation of photosynthetic materials that produce and release oxygen with light stimulation, thereby increasing tissue oxygenation," Egaña said at a press conference on Thursday to present the so-called Hulk project.
