Current Review of the Galaxy Note 10 Plus: This 6.8-inch phone has been impressive so far

Galaxy Note 10 Plus

It looks like the Note 10 Plus

Angela Lang / CNET

I would like to say that from the moment I saw him, I understood Galaxy Note 10 Plus it was something special, the rainbow supported the Aura Glow color, which signaled to the world that Samsung was still on top. (See how to order a note 10 here.) The truth is, I wasn't sure and – early on in the review process – I'm still not. But after picking up my 10 Plus review device, unplugging the phone, running benchmarking tests, taking countless photos of it and with it, and starting to transfer my daily routine to the 6.8-inch dynamic AMOLED display, I can say that for now I am impressed.

The Note 10 Plus is beautiful and not only because of the remarkable color pad. It is fresher and more refined than this one Galaxy Note 9and the location of its front and rear cameras are better positioned. The whole thing feels like a complete package that reminds me of how I felt about Galaxy Note 7 when he first arrived. The general consensus among mobile reviewers was that the Note 7 was almost perfect in its time, until it was tragic,

I don't suppose the Note 10 Plus will crash, especially since Samsung may have hit the right intangibles to make the handset fun and satisfying to use. But there are two exceptions. Moving the power / lock button to the left already presented a learning curve. I'm trained to double-click this button on the right to release the camera (also with my right hand), an Android-built maneuver. Then there's the headphone jack – or rather there isn't.

Samsung has removed this 3.5mm port on both Note 10 phones and gives you a pair of AKG cable headsets in the box, which is good until you reach for your trusted cable pair and find that you either need a dongle adapter, a new pair of wireless headsets, or take these new USB-C headsets wherever and to leave them last.

I will update this current review frequently with new observations and eventually it will become my full, ranked CNET rating. For now, here are some early observations (followed by pricing information and all specifications).

  • The AMOLED dynamic display looks great, but the phone does not appear to produce bright white colors, even when you turn on the "live" settings and select for cool tones.
  • My palm touches the screen several times when I didn't want to say it, and the curved screens make it harder to use the S Pen all the way to the edge.
  • The centered 10MP front camera is far less distracting than the positioning of the Galaxy S10's selfie camera on the right.
  • The S Pen stylus is shorter and slimmer than the Note 9. Its button looks harder to press accidentally, which is a good thing. It also feels less substantial and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
  • You get more shortcuts than the Galaxy S10, including a connection to Windows (see below) and S Pen aerial action.
  • The S S air controls are refreshed.
  • The photos during the day were fantastic, with new extras such as a new Live Focus filter making the portraits look more dreamy.
  • The performance feels zippy, backed up by comparative tests so far that are consistent with other phones using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset.

The following …

  • Additional camera tests, including AR Doodle and special night mode.
  • Portrait video and zoom to audio.
  • Air gestures with S Pen.
  • Translate text to text conversion.
  • Battery Testing.

And now, back to the basics of the Note 10.

The deal with Note 10 and Note 10 Plus

First, there's not just one Note 10, but two: a 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 10 starting at $ 949, £ 899 or AU $ 1,499, and a 6.8-inch Note 10 Plus starting at $ 1,099, £ 999 or AU $ 1699. Phones are colored with a brilliant prismatic lining of two of its color options that shine back to the arc. And as noted, Samsung killed the headphone jack on both Note 10 phones.

Changes to the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Plus do not stop there. The larger Note 10 Plus has four rear cameras, and the smaller Note 10. has no microSD card slot S Pen wins gesture controls which allows you swipe across the screens from a distance, The Note 10 Plus has a larger battery and more RAM than the Note 10, and wireless charging is faster for both phones.

Samsung also made a 5G version of Galaxy Note 10 Plus this is identical in every way, except for the modem inside, which gives it access to the fastest data rates. This The Note 10 Plus 5G variant will be sold with Verizon before branching out to T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint. The Note 10 Plus 5G costs $ 1,299, $ 1,099, or AU $ 1,999, the same price as the Galaxy S10 5G.

The Galaxy Note and Note 10 Plus are here to wow you

Of all the changes to the Note 10, two stand out the most. Samsung says goodbye to the headphone jack is a big dealbecause the brand was the last major bastion of the 3.5mm port. The release of this signals a likely change for future Galaxy phones. You'll get a pair of free USB-C headsets in the box, but the adapter key for your existing headset will cost you $ 10 from Samsung. (I quickly tested four dongles from competing manufacturers, including Google and Apple, and they all worked on the Note 10.)

Just as interesting is Samsung splitting the Note 10 family into two sizes, The company says it's doing it to make a cheaper, smaller phone for people who want the Note, but not a huge device. The strategy also gives Samsung a chance to sell the Note at two different prices, somewhat limiting an upward trend towards more expensive phonesWith Samsung's sales slowing down, Samsung may be trying to hit the sweet spot for more people.

In essence, turning the Note 10 into a Note Lite is a new role for the phone, which has since the first Galaxy Note, is the most powerful device with many features that Samsung makes in a given year. This is no longer the case. Now the smaller Note 10 competes with the Galaxy S10 Plus S10 5G is very close to the Note 10 Plus 5G.

Foldable Galaxy Fold is a completely different story, but one that also threatens to obscure the Note 10 with an even larger screen and larger acceleration design.

# Note 10 Headset Jack: It's time to embrace the life of a dongle

This is in progress risks alienating some fans, Samsung has removed the headphone jack from both Note 10 phones. The cold, hard truth is that most phones have already removed the 3.5mm headphone jack, relying on a USB-C port to plug in a cable headset. Samsung was the last big profit.

Why remove the cry? Samsung said the solution was to free up space on the phone for more battery capacity, and said that about 70% of Galaxy S and Note owners still don't use it as people are moving to wireless headsets.

When the headphone jack goes out, those of you who feel attached to the cable headset will either need to buy a dongle adapter or use the supplied USB-C pair of headphones. Samsung doesn't supply you with a key, but will gladly sell it for $ 10. You can also decide to switch to a wireless headset, including Samsung's Galaxy Buds,

Galaxy Note 10 vs Note 10 Plus: What's the Difference?

Although the design builds on last year's Galaxy Note 9, I was impressed by the way the Note 10 and 10 Plus looked and felt. Let Samsung make quite a handset and one with eye-catching colors (I mean, of course, Aura Glow and Aura Blue).

The hole-in-the-hole camera moves in the center of the Note 10. This is a big improvement over the Galaxy S10 phones, where the lens is just to the right.

Samsung has also shifted the button configuration. The most The Bixby button is goneOr, rather, one with the power / lock button on the left of the spine, below the volume keys. Press once to lock and unlock the screen, press twice to launch the camera (or any application – you can program this in the settings) and press and hold to activate Bixby Voice.

The Note 10's selfie camera is a dead end.

Andrew Hoyle / CNET

The Note 10 phones use the same screen reader that we saw on the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus.

Phones and S Pen felt good in my hand for my short time with phones. Although the Note 10 Plus is massive, I still don't find it too ugly. We'll see if this is still true after spending more time testing.

There are more similarities than differences between the two phones, but Samsung wanted to make sure that the larger Note 10 Plus had an advantage in features. We compare the specs at the end, but here are the key differences that make the Note 10 Plus a little extra premium.

  • Screen size: 6.3 inches vs 6.8 inches.
  • Size and weight of the device: The Note 10 Plus is significantly larger and heavier.
  • AR cameraNote 10 Plus adds a fourth camera for AR video and drawing.
  • Battery capacity: 3500 mAh vs 4,300 mAh.
  • storage: 256GB for Note 10, 256, or 512GB for Plus.
  • RAM: 8GB vs 12GB.
  • microSD card slot: Not on the Note 10, but on the Note 10 Plus.

Samsung's new Note 10 is packed with features as a new video editing tool.

Sarah Teu / CNET

There is no microSD card slot in the Note 10

Samsung too got rid of the microSD card slot just for note 10. Plus, it will still accept whatever card you throw at it.

Again, the reason for the change seems to be the Space Saving Mission, which also helps maintain the lighter and thinner note of the Note 10. However, Samsung also seems to want to give the Note 10 Plus another way to be different.

Everything you need to know about the Galaxy Note 10 (The Daily …

Note 10 Plus cameras do night mode, portrait video, AR doodling

The Note 10 and Note 10 Plus cameras are not much different than the Galaxy S10 Plus and S10 5G phones that Samsung released earlier this year.

On both phones you get:

  • 12MP dual aperture lens.
  • 16-megapixel wide-angle lens.
  • 12MP telephoto lens.
  • 10MP front camera.

As with Galaxy S10 phones, you will be able to switch between the rear lenses. Samsung, in particular, has removed the second front camera from Note 10 phones, citing better portraiture selfie software.

The Galaxy Note 10 Plus adds a fourth 3D rear-facing camera that you can use to take portrait videos that blur the background, and draw on top of photos and videos with a new feature called AR Doodle,

The Note 10 Plus, on the left, receives a fourth camera.

Angela Lang / CNET

I was less than impressed with the portrait video of the Galaxy S10 5G, which also has a 3D camera on the back. When people are moving, the video tends to blur hair, legs, arms and other appendages around the edges. Samsung says it improves portrait video quality, and my test videos have certainly been better in the Note 10 Plus. I look forward to trying this more.

AR Doodle is the other main application for this fourth camera. With the stylus, you can draw the whole picture or video of a person or something by explaining in words, arrows, star sunglasses, capes, name it. If you shoot a person's video, AR Doodle will track their movements so that the bowler hat you just painted on your friend moves with them. It's a fun bonus.

Another good thing about AR Doodle is that you can save the file as a JPEG or movie file and share it on any major platform, not just with other Note 10 users.

Video tools will become better for everyone

New to Galaxy Note phones is the native video editor that you can use to gather polished video with combo clips, transitions, music and cropped edges. The S Pen point is a much more precise cleaning tool than your finger.

This new video editor works with a version of Adobe Premier Rush that is optimized for Galaxy phones and can be exported to social platforms. That already looks like a win.

Samsung also has a new video feature called a zoom-in mic that uses multiple microphones to direct audio into the frame as you record. That is, it will use the microphones up front to record voices in front of you, which should make the voices clearer. When you zoom in closer to an object, say a speaker or a musician, the sound will be louder – a bit like a boom microphone.

Samsung also says it enhances the smoothness of its super-stable video mode, which we saw on Galaxy S10 phones. This mode also applies to videos with hyperlapse.

You can use S Pen to control your Note 10 phone.

Angela Lang / CNET

Gesture control is S Pen's big new trick

The most Pen stylus receives several bonus features in the Galaxy Note 10 and 10 Plus. Last year's Note 9 introduced the Bluetooth feature into the stylus, so you can take a photo at a snap with the S Pen button. There is also a battery that recharges when you slide the stylus back into the phone.

This time the S Pen adds to this Bluetooth power with a new set of gesture control tricks. While holding the button, you can press left, right, up, and down to do things like switch from main camera to rear camera, advance Spotify music tracks, or switch slides in a PowerPoint presentation you start from your phone. You can also use some more sophisticated gestures, such as a circular arc, to make the camera zoom in or out.

It is better to think of this as a remote control. There really is no reason to need to use gesture controls when the phone is in hand, but if you set it up on a tripod to take a group photo, this might be helpful.

I'm on the fence about gesture control in general – often it's a tricky solution to finding a problem that I rarely have – but here I see some real usefulness for some specific cases. It took a while for some of the more modern gestures to hang, but the practice probably makes perfect sense.

It's easy to convert handwriting to text.

Angela Lang / CNET

The handwriting to the text is also cool

Another interesting enhancement to the S Pen is making it easy to convert a handwriting from a note to a text by simply tapping the area and pressing a soft key. You can also export it to a Microsoft Word document.

If you're the type of person who needs a break from writing to write, this would be one way to break your thoughts.

Handing over your Windows 10 laptop with a link to Windows

Exporting to Word is just one link in Note 10 with Microsoft. I'm excited about another, Windows Link.

When you turn it on from the shortcut menu, you will be able to synchronize the Note 10 with your Windows 10 desktop. You will be able to view your messages, notifications and recent photos of Samsung and view your screen.

Samsung gives you two ways to connect your Note 10 phone to a laptop.

Wireless charging, games, Samsung DeX are seeing minor improvements

  • Note 10 phones will work with a 45-watt charger.
  • 30 minutes of charging lasts all day.
  • Wireless charging also gets a little faster.
  • The AI-based game boost application is downloaded below and runs in the background while you play.
  • Galaxy Link is a computer application that connects to your Note 10 for wireless game play. It will be available in the future and will work with the game pad Samsung will sell.
  • The update simplifies use Dex: Ще можете да използвате функцията – която ви дава достъп до съдържанието на вашия телефон от всеки лаптоп или монитор – с кабела, който се намира в полето Note 10.
