Intel 10th Gen Laptop Chip Names Makes My Brain Sick

Finally, Intel introduced a range of Core CPU products based on its own 10th Generation Ice Lake Architectureand suffice it to say that buying a laptop in the coming months probably just got a little complicated – expect to hear about the first models around IFA show the first week of September and you can start shelling your hard-earned money around October.

But now Intel has made levels at different levels of integrated graphics more obvious, instead of folding them into model numbers, and in return dropped the "Y" and "U" nomenclature, indicating whether the chip is for a tiny laptop (Y) or a little larger laptop (U). Putting aside the fact that the name of the top i7 U-series processor ends with an "8", which already breaks the naming model, it just makes it much harder to analyze whether the laptop has a slow U chip or a slower Y. the GPU would like Intel to follow AMD's lead and go with the "Iris Plus 64", or something like that, obviously. Then again, all the nuances will just be washed away in the system manufacturer's specifications, which will boast a vague "10th-gen i7!"

We'll get used to it, but I'm trembling to think what the rest of the 10th generation cohort will do in terms of naming.

Also, take Intel's claim to the ability to "watch 4K HDR video in billion colors" with a grain of salt. All it really means is that the GPU now understands what to do with HDR; there are many other system elements that need to be in place to look like HDR. However, we hope that this will give Microsoft an incentive to make HDR less dysfunctional in Windows 10.

Although graphical improvements vary from processor to processor, from nothing to much, they all incorporate other technologies that are the hallmarks of Ice Lake and its Sunny Beach microarchitecture, These include AI-based DL Boost to accelerate AI conversion ("DL" stands for "in-depth training"), Gaussian & Neural Accelerator (GNA) for low-power background processing (such as analyzing conversation commands) and support for most the new version of its dynamic setup that optimizes the allocation of system resources (such as processor cores and power downloads) based on workload.

They will also support Intel's taste of Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6 Gig Plus, which is essentially Wi-Fi 6 with an optional 160MHz bandwidth, not just the base 80MHz, up to four Thunderbolt 3 devices and more faster memory. Actually having both in a laptop, of course, depends on the design decisions of the manufacturers of the system.
