James Baldwin was respected on social media for what would have turned his 95th birthday


Celebrities and elected officials took to social media Friday to honor and celebrate James Baldwin's life, what his 95th birthday would be.

Baldwin, a globally influential writer, playwright and essayist whose works have had a powerful influence on views on race relations and identity in the United States, was born in Harlem, New York, on August 2, 1924. He spent most of his adult life. in France and he died of cancer there on December 1, 1987.

His notable works include Notes on a Birth of a Son and Fire Next Time – both essay collections – and the novels Go to Mountain and Another Country.

His 1974 novel, If Beal Street Could Talk, was adapted for the 2018 eponymous movie, which won awards. The film starred KiKi Layne, Stephan James and Regina King, who won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress – and was directed by Barry Jenkins.
