About 3 million Americans each year are diagnosed with dementia. This is a condition that can be managed but not cured.
But a new WHO report offers hope to navigate the risks of dementia.
This week, the WHO publishes its first set of recommendations to reduce the global risk of debilitating disease.
The main findings in the guidelines are to exercise more and maintain a healthy diet, focusing on the benefits of the Mediterranean diet – simple vegetable-based cooking, little meat and heavy use of olive oil.
The WHO also recommends not to stay away from tobacco, limiting alcohol consumption and maintaining healthy blood pressure.
According to the WHO, 10 million new cases of dementia are diagnosed each year, which is expected to triple by 2050.
Although there is no cure for dementia, there is hope that better overall health can help prevent it.
As one expert says, what is good for your heart is probably also useful for your brain.
